Pan and James!!

If you love animals with no holds barred, you will love love love this series simply titled "Pan and James". It's a DVD series (only $12.90 for over 40 episodes of over the top cuteness!), which shows these two funny fellas getting simple instructions from their owner at the beginning and then going on their very own adventure to accomplish tasks set by him.

Just to make things clear before I carry on, Pan is the chimp and James is the bulldog.

The two episodes that have left such a deep impression up till now are the ones where:

1) Pan is tasked to go collect his tailor made yukata from the seamstress. After appropriately latching on James' leash outside, he proceeds into the shop to greet the seamstress and wait for his yukata. He starts getting restless and messes up a pile of cushions close by. Tries to put them back but does a messy job so leaves them. Then the seamstress gets him to put on his little yukata and he emerges from the dressing room looking super flyyyyyyy! Following that he goes on to this summer fair with James and have the time of their lives, only stopping for a moment when Pan accidentally torches his paper bag filled with his clothes and a firework prize he won from one of the game stalls at the fair. (The firework actually goes off in the bag!). His owner comes to the fair to pick them and praises the two for competing the task albeit the small accident.

2) Pan and James are tasked to go take photos of their surroundings. Pan is, of course, the main photographer. The first place he goes to is a forest where he takes a photo of James and then meets a Caucasian couple who exclaim at how cute he looks in his little pinafore outfit and camera and Pan takes the opportunity to snap a photo of them. The two then continue on their journey and arrive at the top of a mountain after a very successful cable car ride (Pan is given about 1,000yen every time he goes on a task and he pays for his own food and transport). Pan wants to see through the telescope and discovers he needs to insert coins into it before he can see anything. He is too short to see anything but the sky so he attempts to step up on James. He even inserts the lens of his camera into the peephole of the telescope to take a picture of the sky! Genius! The two then proceeds on to a waterfall where Pan takes a picture of James with the waterfall as a background. He then realizes that he too wants a picture with the waterfall and pulls a chair out, places the camera on it facing the CORRECT DIRECTION and instructs James to help him snap the picture. Due to James' clumsy doggy paws, he takes 4-5 attempts before finally hitting the shutter.

I think this series is still relatively unknown and I was introduced to it through my family anyway. But I never regretted my decision to purchase the DVD series! It's really addictive and because Pan's skills actually get better through the series, you start thinking that he's really just a little boy in a monkey's outfit rather than him being a monkey at all.

There are some short clips on youtube on their adventures that you can check out but the resolutions are quite bad. The commentaries are in mandarin (translated by Taiwanese) and are super hilarious. In Mandarin, the series is so cutely known as 狗狗猩猩大冒險.

Check out this link to a short 10 min scene where the two are tasked to go purchase a fish net and cage(I think it's a cage), from a departmental store.

Enjoy!!
